The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is a well-established national scheme, financed by the Department of Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation, and Science and managed by the Council.
The government has formed a new national research organization known as Taighde Éireann/Research Ireland.
The body will combine the activity of the Irish Research Council and the Science Foundation Ireland. Taighde Éireann will be fully operational shortly.
Applications are now open for the 2025 Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme.
The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme is unique in the Irish research scene, supplementing various avenues for financed postgraduate education in the Irish ecosystem. Among what it means are:
- Personal, recognized rewards for great research in the applicant’s name
- An unbiased method of choice applying international standards. unbiased expert evaluations.
- We offer financing in many fields of study, including archaeology and zoology, as well as benefits for non-directed, grassroots research (except those supported by strategic partners).
Establishing proposals addressing new and developing fields of research, as well as those that provide clean, unique methodologies, are encouraged.
Interdisciplinary proposals are also encouraged, as it is recognized that increasing fundamental understanding requires integrating information, approaches, tools, and viewpoints from two or more fields.
The Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarships are extremely competitive, having an average success rate of 18% over the last five years. Successful individuals in the program are acknowledged as displaying outstanding potential as future research leaders.

These funds will help appropriately qualified research master’s and doctorate candidates who are conducting or want to conduct full-time studies in any subject.
A Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship lasts one to four years, depending on the degree that is being studied and the date of first registration (if applicable).
The scholarship will have a value of up to €31,000 a year in any approved year and will include the following:
- A monthly payment of €22,000 per year
- A support for expenses, including non-EU costs, up to a maximum of €5,750 per year; and
- Approved direct research costs are €3,250 per year.
2025 Government of Ireland Postgraduate Scholarship Programme Eligibility
 Potential applicants should carefully consider whether they are eligible before applying to any programme. Before accessing an application form, all applicants must first complete and pass a preliminary eligibility quiz on the online application system.
Please keep in mind that passing the preliminary eligibility quiz and being granted access to the application form do not imply that all program eligibility conditions have been fulfilled.
If it becomes clear to the Irish Research Council at any point throughout the application, evaluation, or award offer process that an applicant does not match the eligibility criteria, the application will be considered ineligible, and any award offer will be revoked.
- There is no age limit for applicants to either course type.
- All applicants must be associated with a qualifying Irish higher education institution or research-performing organization.
- Applications will be accepted only in Irish or English.
- Applicants must not have had two past unsuccessful applications to the same program, including for affiliated topics. This applies regardless of whether the applicant has changed their current university or study area from before

The application deadline is 16:00 (Irish time) on October 10, 2024.
Supervisor/mentor deadline: October 17, 2024, at 16:00 (Irish time).
The deadline for study office acceptance is 16:00 (Irish time) on October 24, 2024.
Notify results: End of April 2025.
