A foreign national may need to prolong their stay in Canada for some sort of reasons. If you are a visitor or temporary resident who entered Canada and needs to stay longer, you must take steps to maintain your visitor status.
Extending your stay as a visitor
You would have entered Canada using any of the following documents if you arrived as a visitor:
- an eTA, or electronic travel authorization
- a visa for visitors (also known as a temporary resident visa)
To extend your stay in Canada, you must apply for a visitor’s visa.
When do I need to apply?
Applying before to the expiration of your current passport is important. Most tourists are permitted to stay in Canada for up to six months.
The permit that you have if you entered Canada via an official checking stations expires six months from the date of entrance or the expiration of your passport, whichever takes place first.
A visitor record: what is it?                                 What has nothing to do with a visa is a visitor record. It’s a document that grants you legal status and permits you to stay in Canada.
There will be an expiration date on your visitor record; to lawfully stay in Canada after that date, you must either depart the country or apply for another extension.

Extending your stay as a temporary resident
You can apply to have your permit extended if you are a student, temporary worker, or visitor.
To be qualified, you have to:
- Before your status’s official date of expiration, submit your application.
- Maintain compliance with the basic requirements for your stay and abide by all status-related standards (such as not working or studying without permission).
- Meet the requirements of the category in which you are presently applying for your temporary residency status extended.
How to apply
To apply and extend your stay, you must complete an application and provided the member of your family who wants to stay longer in Canada needs to submit an application on their own.

What happens next? You should expect receiving an immigration document with a new expiration date and granting you status if your application is approved.
You can only stay in Canada until your present temporary resident status expires, in the scenario that Canada declines your application.
You have 90 days from the date of the rejection email to request for restoration if you aren’t given an extension.
You are not permitted to work or study in Canada when your permit expires while you are awaiting a response on the renewal application.
In order to apply for the renewal of your temporary status, you have to stay in Canada. If you leave the country, your return will be handled as if you are making a fresh application for entry to Canada
